British ska’s mix of Jamaican ska, music hall, sly wit, political awareness, and an aggression inspired by punk lit up the charts and the big three of that era were The Specials, Madness, and The Beat.

Miriam Gamble was born in Brussels and grew up in Belfast. She studied at Oxford and Queen’s University Belfast. She writes poems, reviews and critical essays. Her first book-length collection, The Squirrels Are Dead, was published by Bloodaxe last year.
