Engegård Quartet to play NUIG

NORWAY’S THE Engegård Quartet will perform works by Haydn, Bartok, and Grieg when they play NUI Galway’s Aula Maxima on Tuesday at 8pm.

The concert, entitled Northern Lights, is the first date on a nationwide tour for the Engegård Quartet.

The Galway programme features Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76 no 3, one of a set of quartets commissioned by the Count Erdödi and originally intended to be played exclusively for him and his guests.

Bartok’s short String Quartet No 3 was written in 1926 and was inspired by Hungarian folk music. Also being performed is Grieg’s String quartet Op 27. Franz Liszt said of it: “It is long time since I have encountered a new composition, especially a string quartet, which has intrigued me as greatly as this distinctive and admirable work by Grieg.”

Tickets are €20/16/6 from Music for Galway (091 - 705962, [email protected] ), Opus II the Cornstore, or www.tht.ie
