Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny, TD, has welcomed the success of the recent public meeting on the Lisbon Treaty held in the TF Royal Hotel in Castlebar. The meeting was hosted by Jim Higgins MEP with Dep George Lee as the guest speaker. The attendance at the meeting was very encouraging as the room was full to capacity and showing the interest in the event.

Twenty eight days for man convicted of second drink driving charge in six months

A Polish man who was convicted of his second drink driving charge in the space of six months was sentenced to 28 days in jail after pleading guilty to drink driving in Ballyhaunis District Court. Calin Ariun, with an address at Lizbrook House, Kirwin, Headford Road, Galway, was living in Ballyhaunis at the time of the offence. Ariun was stopped by Garda Shane Cuffe on Clare Street, Ballyhaunis, on January 1, 2009 at 1.54am when the garda saw a car driving down the road with no lights on. Garda Cuffe went in pursuit of the car which was driving at high speed and eventually got it to stop. When he went to the car he detected a strong odour of alcohol from Ariun. He arrested him and brought him to Ballyhaunis Garda Station where Ariun gave a blood sample which gave a reading of 180mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Driving ban for woman who went drink driving after returning from holidays

A Swinford woman who told the court she was “foolish” after being caught drink driving was fined €500 and disqualified from driving for two years at Ballyhaunis District Court this week. Caroline Leonard, Barnacouge, Swinford, was stopped by Garda Noelle Murphy on February 23 2009 at 11.10pm at Gowlan, Kilkelly. She was arrested by Garda Murphy and brought to Ballina Garda station where she gave a urine sample which had a reading of 174mg of alcohol per 100ml of urine.

Judge adjourns case to hear from car owner

Judge Mary Devins adjourned a case against a 69-year-old retired man who was detected driving a car without insurance, driving licence, tax, or NCT to hear evidence from the owner of the car. Garda Shane Cuffe told the court that he stopped Tom Leneghan, 12 Station Rise, Ballyhaunis, driving a car on the Knock Road, Ballyhaunis, at 4.05pm on May 11 2009. The court was told that Leneghan was a 69-year-old retired man who helped out a cattle dealer friend and never drove himself. He had got a call from the owner of the car to come and help him as there was a cow stuck in a drain and he told him to take the car. Judge Mary Devins adjourned the case until November 3 so she could hear evidence from the owner of the car.

Judge gives man who drove without insurance one chance

Judge Mary Devins gave a Polish man one chance after convicting him of driving without insurance. Slawomir Kozoil, Hazel Hills, Ballyhaunis pleaded guilty in Ballyhaunis District Court this week to driving without insurance.

Garda Martin McHugh told the court that he stopped Kozoil at Hazel Hills, Ballyhaunis on September 17 2009 at 8.09pm and he admitted he had no insurance on the car he was driving which belonged to his brother, but he had insurance on another car and had a valid driving licence. The 30-year-old electrician needs his licence for work, the court was told, and has no previous convictions. Judge Mary Devins told him that he was getting one chance only she convicted and fined Kozoil €600 but didn’t disqualify him from driving.

Mayo customers being notified about gas cooker alert

The National Consumer Agency has put a call out to locate some 5,000 gas cookers which, in certain circumstances, can cause carbon monoxide poisoning if they are not used in accordance with the user instructions and the grill door is closed when the grill is in operation. There were 293 of these cookers sold in Mayo. For specified makes and models of gas cooker, with a separate oven and grill, operating the grill with the grill door closed can cause extremely dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to be produced, which can cause serious injury or death.
