Members of Galway Fire Service, An Garda Síochana, the RNLI and Connacht Rugby Academy came together last weekend for a special ‘Super Hero Day’ to meet the children who have been attending the Niall Tomkins Memorial Kids Club, organised by the children’s charity Hand in Hand http://www.handinhand.ie/. Hand in Hand provide much needed services to families in Galway and around the country who have a child going through the trauma of childhood cancer.

Coast Road traffic accident

Gardai in Oranmore are looking for witnesses in relation to a serious road traffic accident which took place on Thursday August 10 at 6.10pm on the Coast Road in Oranmore.

The vehicles involved in the accident were a blue Mazda 2 and a white Toyota Verso. Serious injuries were sustained in the accident.

Almost 4,000 bed days lost in University Hospital Galway so far this year, says Murphy

Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon-Galway Eugene Murphy has highlighted the fact that more than 90,000 bed days were lost in the hospital system so far this year owing to delayed discharges, including almost 4,000 in University Hospital Galway. A further 597 bed days were lost over the same period in Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe.

Patients are classified as delayed discharges when they no longer need to be cared for in an acute hospital setting but has no access to appropriate step down care. Deputy Murphy said that his party had received recent data in relation to delayed discharges through a parliamentary question.

Kinvara area visual arts will present a screening of the documentary Sean Scully Why This Not That? (53 mins) on the evening of Friday August 25 at 8pm with doors opening at 7.30pm.

The film takes an intimate look at the artist Sean Scully. Shot in an observational style, the main narrative thread begins with a blank canvas and ends with a completed painting. The film explores the meaning of his life, work, art, and creativity through his encounters with his students, at his exhibitions, with his sculpture in the south of France and at the canvas in his New York studio. The film is directed by Michael Doyle, produced by Patrick Timmons Ward, and financed by the Irish Film Board.

My first experience of Haiti was in 2009, when I travelled as part of a group of Irish volunteers with Haven, an Irish NGO working on the ground in Haiti. As part of the trip, we visited a town called Ouanaminthe in the north east of Haiti, where we spent a week working and upgrading buildings.

Galway 2020 this week announced the appointment of four new directors to the board following a rigorous board selection process: Maire Geoghegan Quinn, Caroline Loughnane, Christopher Greene, and Enda Newton were selected on the basis of their respective skill sets in order to add value, and augment the existing Board to ensure the successful delivery of the European Capital of Culture for Galway in 2020.

This most recent round of appointments brings the number of Directors to 12, with the four new appointees joining Aideen McGinley (Chairperson), Cllr Pearce Flannery, Cllr Eileen Mannion, Declan McGonagle, Brendan McGrath, Kevin Kelly, Claire McColgan and Catherine Cullen. €500K Wild Atlantic Way advertising blitz to battle impact of Brexit

Earlier this week television and radio ads encouraging Irish people to get away from it all and explore Ireland’s west coast were broadcast across national channels such as RTE, TV3, Sky and Channel 4 as Fáilte Ireland’s latest home holiday campaign for the Wild Atlantic Way began in earnest. The €500k campaign focusses on bolstering Ireland’s off-season period and will run from the end of Augst through to mid-October reaching an estimated 3.3million Irish adults.

Building on the ‘Embrace the Wild Atlantic Way of Life’ campaign which was launched earlier this year, the campaign highlights a variety of experiences to be had along the coastal route which give visitors a chance to relax and reconnect with friends, family and loved ones.

This year’s Memorial Walk will begin at 12 noon from Claddagh Hall to Blackrock and return - a total distance of 6.5km. The Memorial Walk is Galway Hospice’s biggest fundraising event of the year and since its inception in 2006, the event has raised over €1.7 million to help maintain essential hospice services.
