Community health teams staff shortages ‘completely unacceptable’ says Rabbitte

It is “completely unacceptable” that only four of 25 community health teams in the Galway/Mayo/Roscommon region, have a full staff allocation, according to Fianna Fáil Galway East TD and spokesperson on children and youth affairs, Anne Rabbitte.

At the recent Oireachtas Mental Health Committee meeting, Dep Rabbitte questioned Tony Canavan, the chief officer of the Community Healthcare Organisation for Galway/Mayo/Roscommon, who confirmed there were serious staff shortages across the region. Dep Rabbitte said: “This not only increases pressure on the staff working within the service, it also leads to long waiting times and delays for service users. It’s simply not good enough.”

Samaritans in Galway are launching a major volunteer recruitment campaign to encourage people to get involved with the charity to give something back to the local community and help change people’s lives.

Established in Ireland in 1962, there are now 20 Samaritans branches across the country with over 1,800 active volunteers on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Samaritans are best known for the vital support given to callers on its 24-hour telephone service, but volunteers are also on hand to offer support by SMS, email, face-to-face in communities, through written correspondence and in prisons.
