Educate Together awarded patronage of new Galway Secondary school

Patronage of Galway's new second-level school, due to open in 2019, has been awarded to Educate Together, following a long campaign by Educate Together, and a grassroots group of Galway parents who have been working on this over the past six years.

The decision to award patronage was announced by the Department of Education on Wednesday morning.

NUI Galway Students’ Union to hold road safety day next week

NUI Galway Students’ Union is holding a road safety day on Wednesday October 31, where the Road Safety Authority interactive shuttle and roll-over simulator will be outside Áras na Mac Léinn from 10am to 4pm.

The interactive shuttle allows participants to practice their driving and hazard perception skills on car, motorbike, and bicycle simulators. The roll-over simulator will demonstrate how it would feel if you were in a car which turned over in a collision. Visitors can also practice the driver theory test and see how driving environments and speed affect braking distances on the brake reaction timer. The Students’ Union will also be distributing free high vis items and bike lights throughout the day.

NUI Galway study reveals dogfish diet

Dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula), which are an abundant small shark species in Irish coastal waters, have been shown to have a very varied diet, preferring soft-bodied animals over crabs and fish, according to a new study by marine scientists at the Ryan Institute in NUI Galway. The study was published in the Journal of Fish Biology.
