Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy has been challenged to explain discrepancies between housing and homelessness figures issed by his Department and those issued by COPE Galway.

Speaking in the Seanad, Senator Rónán Mullen challenged Minister Murphy, saying one of the most unhelpful features of the debate on this issue is the continuing discrepancy between official Government statistics on housing and homelessness and the reality as experienced by voluntary groups on the front line.

Canney calls on Galway research groups to seek funding under Government green energy programme

Galway East TD and Minister of State at the Department of Climate Action, Seán Canney, is calling on research groups to seek funding under the Government’s €4 million programme for projects aimed at greening Ireland’s national energy supply.

The National Energy Research, Development, and Demonstration funding programme is a Government initiative to fund innovative energy research projects. Applications are accepted from companies, public sector and semi-state bodies and research organisations, including universities, institutes of technology, and publicly-funded institutions.

Galway roads to benefit from €32 million in Government funding

A total of €31.7 million has been allocated to the Galway city and county councils for repairs, maintenance, and improvements to the city and county road network.

The funding provides for ongoing maintenance, rehabilitative works, strategic improvements, and specific road changes to enhance road safety and quality. The grants are to supplement local authorities’ own resources and expenditure on regional and local roads.

City council supports EU funding for pedestrian bridge at Salmon Weir

The Galway City Council has thrown its support behind a proposed new pedestrian footbridge over the River Corrib, adjacent to the existing Salmon Weir Bridge and in front of the cathedral.

The project, if it secures planning permission, is estimated to cost in the region of €7.2 million with €3.5 million being provided by the EU European Regional Development Fund, if the council can secure permission to divert funds away from the Galway Library and Cultural Centre Development.
