Independent councillor Terry O’Flaherty has called on Galway City Council to reverse the newly-imposed parking restrictions affecting customers of a restaurant, butcher shop, and pharmacy on the Renmore Road.
She told the Advertiser she had been inundated with calls from local people complaining about the placing of a continuous white line in the middle of the road, which making it illegal for cars to park on either side of the line.
“She warned that the new restrictions on the Renmore Road could have a detrimental effect on the businesses involved, the Full Duck Restaurant, the butchers and the Renmore Pharmacy.
“There is limited parking off the road directly in front of these businesses and many of their customers, heretofore, parked their cars on the other side of the road while doing their business in the said premises.
“While I am fully aware of the ongoing parking issues at this location I have previously made representations to City Council to try and resolve these issues. I don’t understand why there were no consultations with the business people, who pay their rates, before the white line was put in place. It was a bit heavy handed to single out this area when this type of parking scenario is occurring on a daily basis throughout the entire city.
“Furthermore for someone to suggest that the customers of these businesses use the church car park, some 400 meters(.04kms ) away, does not make sense, particularly as many of them are elderly from the general locality and depend on the valuable services provided by these businesses,” she said.
