Average Galway three-bed semi to rise by five percent in 2019, survey shows

The price of the average three-bed semi in Galway City is expected to rise by five per cent in the next 12 months, according to a survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance.

Prices in the city rose by 9.7 per cent to €282,500 in 2018 – with a rise of 2.7 per cent between September and December, the biggest national quarterly city increase.

Vigilance urged in wake of rise in meningitis cases

The head of a national meningitis support and awareness organisation is appealing to the public to be vigilant in the wake of an increase in meningococcal disease (the leading cause of meningitis in this country) recently.

Siobhan Holohan, the chief executive of ACT for Meningitis which is based in Galway, and who lost her four-year-old daughter to the condition in 2008, said the charity was saddened to learn from HSE figures that there have been 11 cases of meningococcal disease reported nationally since the last week in December. Three of those affected died.

Local project secures EU funding to reduce carbon emissions from our bogs

An NUI Galway project which aims to reduce carbon emissions from peatlands has secured close to €1 million in funding.

Led in Galway by Terry Morley from the Discipline of Geography and Niall Ó Brolcháin of the eGov Centre at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, the project aims to develop new policies and methods for managing and monitoring carbon reduction from peatlands.

Ms Noone, who is originally from east Galway, will be given the award at the festival fundraising gala which takes place in the Hotel Meyrick, Eyre Square, on Friday March 1. Ms Noone is travelling from LA to receive the inaugural Laochra Ceoil Cellissimo Award.
