Farmers in the west of Ireland are facing into a "potential Armageddon if a no deal Brexit happens", which is why the Government and the EU must be forthcoming with supports for those working in the Agri-sector.
This is the view of Kenneth O’Brien, the Fianna Fáil candidate for Ballinasloe, and the founder of the Forgotten Farmers group. He said farmers have experienced falling prices, with the IFA estimating that beef farmers have already incurred price losses approaching more than €100 million.
Fianna Fáil recently introduced policy proposals on the issue, including Brexit mitigation funding for farmers, specifically exceptional and market disturbance aid for beef and other vulnerable sectors under CAP's Common Market Organisation Regulation.
“The Government have a hands-off approach to the farming community," said Mr O'Brien. "There are farming families in Ballinasloe and across the country who are fearing for their futures. I am calling on the Minister for Agriculture to make a meaningful difference to our lives before it is too late."
