The condition is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in over 50s. It affects one in 10 people and can rob them of their central vision.There are two types of macular degeneration - the dry form which can cause a slow degeneration in the vision or the more severe wet type which causes sudden vision loss.

Galway councillors break ranks to condemn increases in class sizes

After feeling a fortnight of public ire, two Government councillors in Galway broke ranks to publicly to state their opposition to the highly controversial cuts to education proposed in the Budget.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Mary Leahy has condemned the cuts to education in the Budget as “unnecessary”, while Green Cllr Niall Ó Brolcháin said his party is determined to make the Government reduce class sizes before the Finance Bill makes the Budget law.

The long awaited upgrade to the often dangerous Coolough Road took a step closer to reality after the Galway City Council purchased the land near the road at Crestwood.

The land was purchased by agreement recently and funds have been set aside in the 2007 budget, for road widening, footpaths, and public lighting.
