In Irish folklore, a house in which a St Brigid’s Cross is hung is a house protected from fire and evil, so why not get yourself such a cross and find out about its fascinating history this weekend.
This Saturday at 11am in the Galway City Museum, Brendan McGowan will be teaching about the St Brigid’s Cross, St Brigid’s Day, and traditions associated with the saint, as well as giving the public the opportunity to make their own St Brigid’s Cross, free of charge.
Saturday will also mark the opening of a new temporary art exhibition in the museum café by Tullamore native Kevin Colgan. The exhibition will be officially opened at 2pm.
This is part of a series of Saturday events the museum will hold throughout the coming months relating to folk history and tradition. On Saturday 24 at 1pm, Breandán Ó hEaghra will give a class entitled Seanfhocail - Irish Sayings and Proverbs.
