Doughiska needs community centre says Nevin

The Galway City Council must deliver on its promise to build a community centre for Doughiska, the fastest growing area in the city, according to Fine Gael Galway City East candidate Barra Nevin.

Mr Nevin says a community centre for the 7,000 people living in the area is necessary as it would serve as a meeting place for community and sports clubs and act a hub for the local population. He added that the community centre needs to have changing rooms to complement the nearby playing fields in Doughiska Park.

Defence forces invade Eyre Square

Four hundred and twenty members of the Defence Forces will converge on Eyre Square this morning at 12 noon. The troops who are being deployed to the UN mission in Chad, will be inspected by the Minister for Defence Willie O’Dea TD and accompanied by the Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Dermot Earley. The lead unit in the battalion is the Irish speaking Chéad Cathlán Cois (1st Infantry Battalion) from Galway. Also present will be Commandant Maureen O’Brien, the first female deputy commander of an overseas unit. The unit will be deployed to Chad on May 21 to replace the 99th Infantry battalion
