Did religion influence Darwin?

WHEN THE great Charles Darwin published On The Origin Of The Species exactly 150 years ago this year, his theory of evolution was seen as having undermined Christianity.

Yet Darwin was, unlike some of his later followers, never hostile to religion. He hated being called an atheist, preferring the term agnostic to describe himself. He was married to a devout Christian. So how did religion matter to Darwin?

This fascinating question will be discussed at a public lecture, entitled Darwin and Religion, by Dr Aileen Fyfe from the History Department of NUI, Galway, in the Galway City Museum this Saturday at 3pm. This lecture will go beyond modern stereotypes of conflict and opposition, to examine the true role of religion in Darwin’s life and work.
