Further adjournment for false imprisonment case

The case of a 28-year-old man accused of falsely imprisoning a person at a city centre restaurant has been further adjourned to the November sittings of Galway Circuit Criminal Court.

Chandravee Jhurry with an address given as 50 Woodfield, Cappagh Road, Barna, and formerly of 74 Cill Ard, Bohermore, is charged with the false imprisonment of a person at Mauritian Creole Cuisine, Forster Street, on January 16, 2012, contrary to Section 15 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Fifty jobs to go at Boston Scientific but boss says Irish staff are stellar

Medical device company Boston Scientific is to cut 50 jobs from its Galway plant. It is understood that management informed staff of the decision on Tuesday afternoon.

The US multinational announced the jobs losses as part of its global restructuring. There are more than 2,500 people employed at the Ballybrit facility.

NUIG to reopen student hotline next week

The countdown to the beginning of the new academic year will begin next week with the reopening of NUI Galway’s dedicated first year student hotline on Wednesday. Now in its third year, the hotline will be open to students, their parents, and their advisers and will run until Friday September 28.

The initiative, which was launched in summer 2010 and was the first of its kind across the sector, has been specially designed to help incoming first year students make the transition to third level education.

Gardai continue hunt for Inverin kidnapping burglar

A Inverin shop manager was left ‘traumatised’ but uninjured following a terrifying ordeal in which he was kidnapped at gunpoint, forced to open the safe of the shop, and left tied up as the culprit fled.

No arrests had been made at the time this paper went to press but gardai have confirmed the investigation is on-going with CCTV footage and other evidence being examined. Between 11.45pm on July 30 and 12.15am on July 31 the manager of Siopa An Phobail in Inverin, County Galway, had emerged from the Poitin Stil pub and was approached in the car park by a lone man.

Well now, after a month of non-stop events in the city, my get up and go has got up and gone.

Blue Teapot seeks FundIt donations to help with next production

Blue Teapot, the Galway theatre company for people with intellectual disabilities, has five days left to raise the funds needed to help stage its upcoming production.

Blue Teapot will stage Sanctuary by Christian O’Reilly at the Galway Theatre Festival. The company is nearing the end of a campaign on FundIt for the new play and must meet/exceed €4,000 or all pledges are returned.
