Further remand for assault and burglary accused

A 20-year-old Newcastle man charged in connection with the unprovoked assault on two men and a city centre burglary has been further remanded in custody.

Presiding at the holiday sittings of Galway District Court on Tuesday, Judge Conal Gibbons refused jurisdiction in the case of Steven Carew with an address at 16 Upper Canal Road, Newcastle, who is charged with assaulting two men causing them harm at Eyre Square, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act on February 13, 2011. He is also charged in relation to a separate burglary incident at an apartment at Cuirt Eanna, Long Walk, Galway, to commit the theft of a laptop/handheld computer to the value of €500 on September 24, 2011.

Inspector Ernie Whyte told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to all matters being dealt with summarily in the district court. In relation to the assault charges Inspector Whyte said that it would be alleged that the two injured parties had been walking through Eyre Square when they were set upon by the defendant and another accomplice. In relation to the burglary matter the court heard that it is alleged the defendant entered the apartment at 1.30am and made his way to a bedroom where a resident had been asleep.

Judge Gibbons refused jurisdiction in all matters and further remanded Carew in custody to appear at Haristown District Court on August 17 for DPP directions.
