A man charged in connection with an assault during Galway Race Week which left a Tuam man fighting for his life in hospital is due to appear before Harristown District Court tomorrow.
Eighteen-year-old Shane Byrne, a Dublin native who moved to Tuam at Christmas but who has no fixed address, was arrested early last Sunday in relation to the assault on Shane Grogan at Fairgreen in Tuam.
Following his arrest Byrne was detained at Tuam Garda Station and brought before a special sitting of Galway District Court on Monday charged with assault causing harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act. He was granted free legal aid, however an application for bail was refused by Judge Gerard Furlong who remanded Byrne in further custody to appear at Harristown District Court tomorrow morning.
It is understood that Mr Grogan, a 22-year-old GMIT graduate from Shop Street, Tuam, had been walking home with his girlfriend at around 3.30am last Sunday after enjoying a day at the races when the assault occurred at the intersection of Milltown Road and Ballinrobe Road. Mr Grogan was rushed to University Hospital Galway but was transfered to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where he has since undergone surgery and is now described as being in a critical but stable condition.
