Two Galway farmers are finalists in National Farmer of the Year Awards

Two Galway farmers are in the running to take home the top prize at the prestigious Farmer of the Year Awards, which will place in Dublin next week.

Kenneth Keavey from Corrandulla, owner of Green Earth Organics; and Ronan Byrne from Athenry, also known as The Friendly Farmer, have both been shortlisted in the Rising Star category of the inaugural Zurich Farming Independent Farmer of the Year Awards, which were developed to formally recognise the best farmers throughout the country. Mr Keavey is also in the running in the Tillage category.

Connemara Adventure challenge for Croi

Some 500 competitors are expected to take part in the Connemara Adventure Challenge at Killary Harbour, Leenane, on Saturday.

This 32.5km sprint adventure race takes place along a route which offers spectacular views of the Maamturks, Twelve Bens, Killary Harbour and the Mweelrea Mountains. Competitors run, climb hills, cycle and kayak to complete the challenge and then gather for a party at Killary Adventure Centre.

Anti-suicide walk in Galway set to exceed three thousand attendees

Almost 4,000 people are expected to take part in a 5k walk along Salthill to raise awareness of suicide prevention. The event, called Darkness Into Light, will be taking place in the early hours of Saturday morning and is the biggest event organized by Pieta House, a suicide prevention charity.

The walk starts at 4.15am on Saturday May 10, with the route going through the promenade to South Park, with participants returning to Leisureland as the sun rises over the bay. Online registrations have already started piling up, and organizers are confident that participants will exceed the 2,300 who took part last year.
