This year, as part of National Bike Week, the annual Tour de Lough Corrib charity cycle in aid of the heart and stroke charity Croí, will take place on Sunday, June 15.
Once again, cyclists of all ages and abilities will participate in what has become one of biggest annual charity cycle in the west of Ireland. Irish and international cycling legend Sean Kelly is once again lending his support to this important charity fundraising event and has committed to joining the cyclists on this magnificent route through scenic Connemara.
Entry to the ‘Tour de Connemara’ is free, but participants are asked to fundraise in support of the work of Croí in its ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke. Last year, the event raised more than €60,000 and the event is now one of the charity’s single biggest fundraising events.
This year Croí is calling on women of all ages with an interest in cycling to participate in the event as part of Croi’s ‘Women at Heart Campaign’ which aims to highlight the prevalence of heart disease and stroke among Irish women.
Speaking about this campaign, Croí’s Karen Maloney pointed out: “Irish women are seven times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than breast cancer, yet there is a huge lack of awareness of this shocking fact among Irish women. Our campaign aims to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as being health conditions that effect women as much as men and in some cases, more than men.”
Leading west of Ireland company Corrib Oil is once again the main sponsor of this event, having been a sponsor for the past 19 years of the event’s history. Additional sponsorship support this year is being provided by Nigel’s Cycle Store, Galway, and Al Hayes Motors Tuam.
