GMIT Students’ Union launches Christmas #SUheroes

GMIT Students’ Union has announced the launch of its SU heroes campaign, centred on fundraising and the collection of new toys for underprivileged families and sick children in hospital around Christmas time. The toys will be distributed through the Society of St Vincent De Paul and will also be given to sick children in UHG over the Christmas period.

The campaign will run until December 18 with the students’ union encouraging students to run their own events and fundraisers. The campaign started on Tuesday with a bucket collection in Eyre Square, and events taking place this week include a sky dive, Christmas market, Christmas carols, and a children’s Christmas party today (Thursday) featuring real reindeer and a visit from Santa.

The concert, which is taking place in the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway, also marks the 10th anniversary of Estonia’s accession to the EU. Galway Memorial Tree lights to be switched on tomorrow

The lights on the Galway Memorial Tree, located at Galway Hospice, will be switched on tomorrow (Friday) at 6pm by Mayor of Galway Donal Lyons.

Clare Quinn, who stole the show on last week’s Late Late Toy Show with her rendition of ‘Nessum Dorma’, will be the guest soloist at the event. The Kiltulla Community Choir will sing a selection of traditional and contemporary Christmas songs to set the festive spirit for the switching-on ceremony.

A Wilde night in the west

It is hard to believe that it is a decade since Oscar Wilde and Thomas Vilde took up residence outside Matt O’Flahertys on Williamsgate Street. A gift from the Estonian nation, in that period they have become the iconic face of modern Galway. Tonight a concert of Estonian music will be held to mark the occasion. I caught up with the happy Wildes as they sat outside a shop in the city centre.
