Four Galway youngsters shortlisted as part of competition to find Ireland’s newest double act

Two Galway acts have made it through to the final of a competition set up for tweens and teen presenters to showcase their presenting skills with a pal, for a chance to win a once in a lifetime prize.

Tuckatoos, the new savoury Irish snack brand, took to the roads this summer with ‘Tuckatoos Studio’ in the search for Ireland’s next double act. Twelve acts made the final shortlist, with the overall winning act receiving a trip to London to see the world’s biggest boyband One Direction.

Four cousins for the summit

Four Galway-born first cousins are climbing Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil, in aid of the Alan Kerins Project. Alan’s sister Miriam Kerins, along with cousins Aoife Lynskey-Keane, Brenda Kerins, and Martina Kerins will take part in the Caps to the Summit challenge this September. The four are hoping to raise €10,000 for the worthy cause which supports community and youth leadership development projects in Zambia.

He said the shortage of available places to stay also posed a huge problem for the more than 25,000 students returning to college at NUI Galway and GMIT in the coming weeks.

Galway Civic Trust seeking to connect with Galway emigrants around the world

Do you have a friend or family member from Galway city or county who is now living and working overseas? Or are you a former Galway native reading this from your adopted home abroad? If so, Dúchas na Gailllimhe – Galway Civic Trust wants to hear from you. The heritage organisation is launching an initiative entitled The Galway Tribal Diaspora Project which aims to collect and record the stories of former Galway residents who have gone on to carve out careers or life stories beyond Irish shores.

Project co-ordinator Michael Quinn explains the concept behind the initiative. “The Galway Tribal Diaspora Project seeks to compile pen-portraits of people who previously lived in Galway but have who have moved away from Ireland in order to establish new lives, careers, or opportunities. For centuries Galway people have emigrated to locations all around the world for a variety of reasons, and for many of those their personal stories have been lost. This exciting new venture gives us the opportunity to redress that by connecting with our diaspora and recording their unique stories and experiences.’’

An exciting programme of Galway events is planned to celebrate Heritage Week which  begins on Sunday.

Friends of Merlin Woods is working with many different organisations this year, and it will be the first year of the Community Field School funded by the Heritage Council which begins August 24. Led by archaeologist Martin Fitzpatrick, the two day workshop ‘Introduction to Archaeology‘  will show surveying techniques, identifying archaeological features of Merlin Castle, vernacular buildings, and much more.
