Red poppies are worn in remembrance of the dead of WWI but for many the symbol is considered a glorification of war or a way of avoiding acknowledging its horrors and devastation, and so the white poppy has become an alternative.

City survey to examine people’s attitudes to alcohol

A survey on people’s attitudes and behaviour in relation to alcohol use is being spearheaded in a bid to get specific data on the issue in the city.

Face-to-face interviews for the study will take place over the next two weeks and are being undertaken as part of the Galway City Alcohol Strategy, a Galway Healthy Cities Alcohol Forum initiative.

It’s been three and a half years since I left Galway. The winding streets, the salty winds and icy rain that blew life and excitement into your lungs were beginning to wane for a whole generation. I had spent three years at NUIG flitting between Drama Soc and Flirt FM radio, and in between squeezing out a bachelor’s degree in English and Classics together with a diploma in Irish. We came in as “freshers” just when the Celtic Tiger was unleashing its final booming roar, Rag Week and campus life were electric and Galway was alive.

Councillors bemoan lack of services linking city’s west and east sides

A number of city councillors have voiced their frustration about the lack of a direct bus service linking Knocknacarra and Westside with the industrial estates on the eastern side of the city such as Parkmore, Liosbaun, and Ballybane.

Bus Eireann representatives Gerry Cannon and Brian Connolly gave a comprehensive presentation to councillors about the city’s public transport system at this week’s local authority meeting.
