Lorraine Higgins calls on Sinn Fein to persuade IRA to give its fortune to those who suffered at its hands

Senator Lorraine Higgins today said that Sinn Fein should use whatever influence it has with the IRA to ensure that monies left over when they allegedly disbanded is distributed to deserving causes both in Northern Ireland and the Rep of Ireland.

She said that it is plausible to assume that IRA accounts were in the black when they alleged they disbanded and this “really begs the question as to where the money has gone.|

Galway disappoints in latest litter survey

The latest survey by the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) alliance shows Galway city as ‘moderately littered’, losing its Clean to European Norms status, and in 33rd position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities nationwide.

While many of the sites surveyed were found to be in good condition — the majority of sites in Galway scored an A or B grade according to an An Taisce inspector — a small number of areas were found to be moderately or heavily littered.

Galway baby deemed Ireland's cutest

Baby Tom Fay from Renmore has been officially announced as Ireland's cutest baby. The Galway Advertiser was contacted by Tom's mother Bronagh earlier this week to inform the paper that her beautiful little boy had been shortlisted to the last 12 in the Irish Sun competition to find Ireland's cutest baby. He was then shortlisted to the final three, and Bronagh was informed last night that a flurry of votes for Tom meant he had been deemed the winner!

Aran fisherman dies in trawler accident

A young Aran fisherman has died this week following an accident on board a trawler in Donegal.

James Joyce (27) of Cill Ronáin in Inis Mór, fell while cleaning out stagnant water from tanks in a refrigeration unit on the Galway-registered trawler Oilean an Oir at Killybegs Harbour at around lunchtime on Monday.

Urgent appeal to help Galway based children’s cancer charity

Hand in Hand children’s cancer charity has launched an immediate appeal for funding due to an unprecedented demand for its services. The not-for-profit organisation, which began operating in 2006, supports families who are affected by childhood cancer throughout Ireland. Its aim is to alleviate some of the stress, anxiety, and practical difficulties faced by families who have a child undergoing treatment for cancer, through the provision of practical (laundry, childcare, domestic cleaning, and meals) and emotional support.

Up to 250 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Ireland, and of that number 20 per cent will not survive. The incidence of childhood cancer is increasing every year meaning funding is essential to meet this growth as the treatment of childhood cancer often extends to years.
