Galway-based ACT for Meningitis are a special charity, formed from heartbreak, to ease the heartbreak felt so many families. Its existence is an unbelievable act of selflessness, a sharing and bearing of pain by its founder Siobhan Carroll and her husband Noel, who lost their daughter Aoibhe at just four years of age, to this unforgiving illness. The disease they hope to raise awareness of is one that strikes quickly, without much warning and has taken countless lives over the years. This week, another mother who lost a child to meningitis has spoken out about ACT for Meningitis and how they have provided her family with unbelievable support at the most tragic point of their lives.

I can well remember the last time I met Bishop Eamon Casey. I was late for a reporting gig at some event in the Crescent and we both ran on the footpath around the corner and crashed into each other, each of us as apologetic as the other. In hindsight, I should have been able to avoid him because as he walked, he sang and so his arrival was flagged well before he appeared.

“On behalf of his son, Peter, his brother, Father Micheál, his sister, Ita Furlong, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, great-grand nieces and great-grand nephews, we wish to acknowledge the priestly work of Bishop Eamonn, especially in the pursuit of social justice for the marginalised, as evidenced by his work with Shelter in London in the 1950’s and 1960’s and later with his involvement in the setting up and development of Trócaire. Notwithstanding the demands on his time, Bishop Eamonn was a great source of love and support, making himself available to celebrate and to empathise with us in all our important family occasions.
