In a ‘Welcome Home Event’, Galway native Enda O’Coineen is taking to the stage on Sunday March 26 at the Meyrick Hotel. He will give an illustrated talk on his latest adventures during the Vendee Globe Challenge in which he single-handedly entered the ‘around the world’ race. The event is open to the public. Funds raised will go to the Atlantic Youth Trust - the all island youth development tall ship charity. It is being jointly hosted by the Royal Galway Yacht Club and the Galway Bay Sailing Club.
Enda set out on 6 November from France to compete in the world’s toughest sailing race, a solo, non-stop lap of the planet. 61 days alone at sea makes this his most extraordinary adventure story to date.

Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West Éamon Ó Cuív has welcomed the recently established taskforce to reverse the decline of the curlew. The committee is bringing together relevant experts to decide on a plan of action to protect and conserve this endangered bird.
“I am pleased that Minister Humphreys has taken this action to protect the curlew. The birds traditionally nested in the islands on Lough Corrib, where they were free from predators, but they have come under attack from mink in recent years, resulting in a huge drop in population numbers. “A recent survey revealed the extent of the decline in the bird species, with just 122 breeding pairs recorded.
“This is a dramatic 97% fall of in numbers since the 1980s and further emphasises the need for urgent intervention.“ He said that he hopes that the Minister’s taskforce will act swiftly and decisively to deal with this issue so that the survival of the curlew in its natural habitat can be secured.
