Chanelle Group puts Loughrea on the map

County Galway’s Chanelle Group, recently named Ireland’s Exporter of the Year 2016 , is putting the small county town in Galway on the map, according to its founder and managing director Michael Burke.

"It is a tribute to the combined efforts of our people that Chanelle is being recognised in Ireland and worldwide for its manufacturing excellence, its innovation and its exporting success," he said at the awards presentation by the Irish Exporters Association.

Well-known Galway history professor honoured

NUI Galway's Professor Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh has received an honorary degree from the National University of Ireland for his contribution to Irish history, the Irish language and Irish public life.

Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, who is the professor emeritus in history, was conferred with a D Litt by the chancellor of the University, Dr Maurice Manning, at an honorary conferring ceremony at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Kinvara pupils help create Ireland’s first history book by children

Sixty pupils from third to sixth class in Northampton National School, Kinvara, have contributed to Across An Open Field is the first Irish history book written and illustrated by children.

Children from the school were supported in their research by teachers Shane McDonagh, Róisín Forde, and Orla McHale, writer Mary Branley, and artist Ann Donnelly. They explored family histories and the role of blood relations during World War I, the 1916 Rising, and the War of Independence. The book was launched in Northampton National School by Fine Gael Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon this week.

Christmas revision courses at Mill Street

Enrolments for the Leaving and Junior Cert intensive Christmas courses are currently being accepted at The Galway Study Centre at Mill Street. Classes will start on Tuesday morning, January 3, and continue until Saturday January 7.

The latest date for making a booking is Monday December 19 although it is expected that some classes will be completely booked out at this stage. Revision will concentrate on key topics in each subject and students can enrol from one up to a maximum of four subjects. Excellent study notes will be provided and there will be a lot of emphasis on examination and study techniques.
