Gardaí seek witnesses to December assault

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to an assault that occurred in the city centre last December to come forward.

The incident took place between Jury’s Inn and Wolfe Tone Bridge on December 3 between 2.30am and 3am. A man was queuing for a taxi along with his wife and a friend when there was a disagreement over a taxi fare. The man was punched in the jaw by an unknown assailant; the man who punched him then walked off across the bridge in the direction of Galway Fire Station.

A number of people were present at the time of the assault. The injured party suffered a fractured jaw as a result of being punched. Anyone who witnessed this assault is asked to contact Galway Garda Station at 091 538025.

Last resident of Omey

Island dies

The man who was the last resident of Omey Island died at the weekend in his mobile home on the island.

75-year-old Pascal Whelan who was born on the island but left with his parents for a life in Wales, Australia and eventually New Zealand, when he was a child.

A stuntman who had worked in films such as Crocodile Dundee, Mr Whelan returned to the island some years ago where he partook in his passion for scuba diving and fishing.
