Gradam finalists to be announced next week

Mayor Noel Larkin, will announce the finalists of Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh 2017 at 11.30 am, next Tuesday, April 11 at a press event which will take place in the Eyre Square Centre, Galway. Last month, Gaillimh le Gaeilge, which has been running the Gradam for the past 15 years in association with the Galway Advertiser, unveiled the 18 businesses in Galway city that have put themselves forward for this year’s award.

Three government departments are collaborating to devise a radical package of measures to address the traffic-congestion crisis at Parkmore on foot of a meeting between Minister Simon Coveney and Galway TD Hildegarde Naughton last month.
Deputy Naughton met with her Fine Gael colleague, along with representatives of Parkmore-based companies and Galway Chamber of Commerce, to discuss ongoing traffic problems affecting the business park on March 3.

NUI Galway will tomorrow welcome President of the Republic of Croatia Mrs Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, as part of the official State visit to Ireland. The President’s visit to Galway is particularly celebratory as the city, together with Rijeka, was designated the European Capital of Culture 2020. The visit will also be an opportunity for the President to meet some of the Croatian community at the university.
NUI Galway President Dr Jim Browne, speaking in advance of the official visit, said: "It is a great pleasure to announce the visit of President Grabar-Kitarovic to NUI Galway, where she will engage with students and academics on a range of programmes from across the campus. We look forward to welcoming her and the Croatian delegation to the university. As the newest member of the European Union, this visit is a welcome opportunity to hear from the Croatian President and this dynamic young European state at a time when European ideals are being tested. A Latvian man has been found guilty of murder after he strangled a fellow Latvian who had filed a complaint against him to the gardai. It was the prosecution’s case that 31-year-old Andresj Krauze murdered Juris Buls (30) after he refused to withdraw his complaint.
Krauze, of Dudley Heights, Glenamaddy, Co Galway, pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to murdering Mr Buls at an unknown time on July 7 or 8, 2011 in the county of Galway. The victim’s decomposed body was found in a drain two weeks later.
