They say that the concept of Christmas lights emanated from the location of the season in the darkest time of the year. When the days are the shortest, when even the light from the stars is covered by the dark clouds, creating a big dark curtain over the world and allowing our weary eyes respite from the bright summer sun.

The bells of the Abbey Church in St Francis’ Street will ring in Christmas and the New Year for the first time in more than 30 years this week following a massive restoration project on the church.
Work has been under way for the past two months on reroofing the historic city centre church and carrying out a number of improvement and restoration works, and Highfield Contractors have pulled out all the stops to have the church completed for the Christmas celebrations, while bell specialists Belltron have restored the bells and connected them to an electronic ringing system.

The 20th annual Christmas messages programme will be broadcast at 6.04pm on Christmas Eve and 1.04pm on Christmas Day, and will feature music from a seven-track CD recorded recently by a group of Galway musicians to raise money for the Western Alzheimer’s Foundation.

With Christmas upon us, we should spare a thought for the environment and try to make Christmas as environmentally friendly as possible. This does not mean that we cannot enjoy Christmas, rather it means we make small changes to reduce any possible negative environmental effects our enjoyment of Christmas may have.
Christmas is a short period in the year when our lifestyles put more strain on the environment than usual. Many aspects of our environment may be affected negatively from increased waste creation, increased energy usage, increased water usage, and increased littering. Goods are bought which leads to increased packaging, more people moving about leads to increased energy usage, and nights out can lead to increased littering.
