Ray Rooney was a remarkable man. Tall, distinguished, elegant, articulate, he was the kind of person you’d want on your team batting for your side. The people you want standing on the wall, someone to look over you. As an ambassador, he was most impressive, and although officially the Honorary Norwegian Consul in Ireland, it was for his native Galway that he was most often on diplomatic duties. When he passed away last weekend after a short illness, there was tremendous shock at his death, not least because he was still very much part of what is happening around Galway city and county.

Young man dies in weekend collision

One young man lost his life and another was injured in a crash close to Knockdoe at the weekend.

Seamus Costello (21) of Mulacutra, Claregalway, died when the car he was driving hit a wall at Carraghy, Corrandulla, just off the N17 at around 11.30pm on Sunday. His passenger, a man in his twenties, was injured in the collision and both were brought to UHG after the accident.

Pregnant woman claims machete was being used to cut meat for her dogs

A pregnant woman found in possession of a machete claimed that it had been in her caravan because she used it to cut meat for her dog.

This paltry explanation was rubbished by Judge Mary Fahy who said that this dangerous instruement was a weapon and that the court would not accept that it had been used in any domestic or culinary capacity.
