In case you haven’t noticed it, the large section of the paper that has just fallen on your shoe is a 72-page magazine which we have produced to mark the fact that on this day 40 years ago, the first issue of the Galway Advertiser hit the streets. At the time, it was deemed crazy that a product could be given out free on such a mass scale and as you can imagine, predictions of its demise came thick and fast. However, it has stood the test of time, hence today we carry the baton into the fifth decade.

It is clear to most people in Galway that the medical device industry plays a fundamental role in the economic fabric of the city. Indeed, while visitors to the city may be surprised to overhear terms like ‘stent’, ‘biomedical device’ or ‘catheter’ rising out of countless conversations on Shop Street on Saturday afternoon, it is hardly surprising to locals who know that more than 6,000 are employed in the medical device sector in Galway. Indeed, if we look at the number of people indirectly employed this figure rises to about 10,000. No doubt every Galwegian knows someone who works in the medical device industry or a related industry.

The Ronhill Connemarathon - perfect, simply perfect

Mountains reflected perfectly onto lakes as smooth as glass, flocks of sheep running through the finish line and Ultra Marathon course records broken by an English man were the talk of the day at the RonHill Connemara Marathon on Sunday. There were as many stories as there were runners when the 3,200 participants gathered in Peacockes Hotel in Maam Cross for the after run refreshments - many of whom dined alfresco to soak up the 19 degrees of glorious sunshine.
