“I work directly for the Seniors Support Services arm of COPE Galway,” explains Geraldine. “We provide a Meals on Wheels service to elderly people in Galway. Some of the food donations are used to help us reduce our food bills and keep the service affordable.”

Labour City Councillor Niall Mc Nelis, has urged the Government to urgently address the chronic labour shortage in construction that is delaying the building of homes.

Cllr Mc Nelis said the Government’s own figures show that there is a shortage of over 50,000 construction workers in Ireland and that this is having a devastating impact on the building of new homes, with many projects delayed or cancelled.

Galway lighting the way on climate — Sen O’Reilly

Galway has become the first city in Ireland to complete the rollout of LED lighting, leading to an annual saving of approximately €600,000, Senator Pauline O’Reilly said this week.

The Green Party Senator commended Galway City Council this week for its work in switching to the energy efficient bulbs, which have yielded a 64 per cent reduction in energy use from lighting for the local authority while also helping to reduce carbon emissions.

Ringroad planning back to square one

Original plans for the controversial N6 Galway ringroad have been resubmitted to An Bord Pleanala.

Last week a Galway County Council road development application and separate motorway scheme application for the N6 were published by the national planning authority under new headings and file numbers. The resurrected proposal is to build a new road in a northern arc from Coolagh to the Coast Road past Barna. This would include two tunnels and a new bridge over the Corrib.
