A team of kickboxers from the Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Gym were given a Mayoral Reception at Galway City Hall recently for their outstanding achievements at the Unified World Kickboxing Championships in Tuscany back in October.

Mayor Eddie Hoare in his speech, said that he appreciated that sports play a huge role in people’s lives and regardless if it is football, soccer, hurling, rugby, golf, kickboxing, boxing, handball or indeed any sport, the athletes need to be recognised for their efforts.

He especially said that any athlete/s who represented their club, town/city & country at International level needs to get a special mention as they are also ambassadors for their country and that Black Dragon have been doing this with great pride & success for decades.

Coach Pete Foley thanked the Mayor and members of the council for the reception and commented that minority sports such as kickboxing and indeed other martial arts etc don’t get the same press as other mainstream sports but the athletes train every bit as hard, if not harder and make the same sacrifices and commitments.

He said it was heartwarming for the City and of course Mayor Hoare to recognise this and finished by telling the fighters how proud he was of them all.
