‘Appalling’ looting of houses shows need for social housing changes - Higgins

The vandalism and theft of boilers causing more than €100,000 worth of damage at a Galway City Council-owned housing estate has been described as “appalling” by local TD Michael D Higgins.

The Labour president said that the break-in to houses in the Sliabh Bhán estate in Ballybane is “an appalling development” but one that underlines the urgency of transferring empty finished houses to social housing.

People urged to join hands to save Portiuncula Hospital

A local action committee is urging businesses, clubs, organisations and individuals to take part in a “Hands Around Our Hospital” protest aimed at highlighting concerns over future services at Portiuncula Hospital.

The event takes places at the 197-bed Ballinasloe facility on Tuesday at 1.30pm amid growing fears that the county hospital may suffer as the health cuts continue to bite.

The College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway has announced details of a special entrance maths examination which will give students a second chance to pursue a career in engineering. The exam, which takes place on Wednesday August 25, is for students who achieve the CAO points for an undergraduate engineering degree course at NUI Galway but who have not met the obligatory maths requirement.

Edward Lee photography exhibition in Galway city library

Today an exhibition by talented photographer Edward Lee will begin in Galway city library running until Monday August 30.

As well as being a successful photographer Lee is also a writer and painter originally from Dublin, but now living in Galway. This is his first photography exhibition. He has exhibited his paintings in many venues in Dublin and Galway, with many of his works in private collections. His photographs have appeared in magazines on both sides of the Atlantic. He is currently working on two photography collections "Lying Down With The Dead" and "Naked". His poetry and short stories have appeared in magazines in Ireland, England, America and Canada. His debut poetry collection, Playing Poohsticks On Ha'Penny Bridge, was published last year by Spider Press.

Sssssh. Listen. Can you hear the patter of hundreds of tiny trotters as the piglets sprint away from the massive swill trough before the bold pig spills it over. Off they run lest they be splashed with any of the muck-spreading that has been caused by the bould pig Ivor. They’ve all known for a long time that the bould pig Ivor had been lashing up the swill with all four trotters, but sure, they let him carry on because they just didn’t want the farmer to come over and see what was going on at the trough. ‘Cos then he might look at them all, and see the muck on the trotters from the fumbling in the greasy swill.
