More than 8,914 patients of University Hospital Galway (UHG) and 121,000 patients nationally were without a bed in 2023, making it the worst year for hospital overcrowding on record according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation (INMO).
University Hospital Galway came third in the list of top five most overcrowded hospitals in 2023 with University Hospital Limerick coming in first with 21,141 patients without beds this year, Cork University Hospital in second with 12,487 patients. Sligo University Hospital followed Galway, coming fourth with 8,094 patients without a bed in 2023 and St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin was in fifth place at 6,555 patients.

More than 20,000 meals have been donated to people in Galway experiencing food insecurity thanks to a partnership between Deliveroo Ireland and food distribution charity, FoodCloud.
The partnership, which began in 2022, aims to provide half a million meals for FoodCloud’s network of 650 community and voluntary groups across Ireland by 2024. The partnership is part of Deliveroo Ireland’s global Full Life campaign. Full Life aims to use Deliveroo’s unique network of riders, grocers, restaurants, and customers for good and support the local communities in Ireland where it operates.

Now in its third successive year, the ‘Orchards in the Community’ initiative is part of the DC (Data Centres) for Bees Pollinator Plan which aims to ‘save Ireland’s declining bee population’, ensuring the survival of bees and other endangered species of flying insects and butterflies. Despite being a key contributor to the pollination of Irish plants, 33 per cent of bees are facing extinction.
