Absence of toilet facilities at playing pitches a growing concern - Cllr Mike Cubbard

Cllr Mike Cubbard has called for action on the urgent need for toilet facilities at playing pitches around Galway. He believes that the lack of adequate facilities poses significant challenges for the comfort and well-being of young people.

Cllr Cubbard said that it is imperative that accessible toilets are implemented as the number of young people involved in sport continues to grow. He feels that the absence of adequate toilet facilities not only inconveniences players and spectators but also presents health and safety risks, particularly for young girls.

"Research has shown that access to proper sanitation facilities is essential for encouraging continued participation in sports, particularly among girls. Without the assurance of nearby toilet facilities, many young club members, especially girls, may feel discouraged from fully engaging in sports activities, thereby hindering their physical and social development."

The Independent councillor has grown frustrated with the lack of delivery and the pace in which these changes happen, having voiced his concerns several occasions: "Take the Westside Astro facility for example. I have been raising concerns about a lack of toilets there for several years and allocated some funds to start this project a few years back. However, there are still no toilet facilities for participants to use."

He believes that addressing this issue requires a collaborative effort involving the local authorities, sports organisations, community leaders and elected members: "By investing in the development of accessible and well-maintained toilet facilities at playing pitches, we can create a more welcoming and supportive environment for people."

Cllr Cubbard said that the use of toilet facilities is a necessity, not a privilege.

"We cannot continue to ignore the significant impact that the lack of toilets at playing pitches has on the participation of young athletes. It is essential that we prioritise the provision of adequate toilet facilities to ensure that all children, regardless of gender, can enjoy sports in a safe and inclusive environment."
