At the All Ireland Safety Quiz Finals held in Athlone on Saturday, Thermo King - Ingersol Rand, Galway was the overall winner in the Previous Entrants category.The All Ireland Occupational Safety Quiz Finals are run jointly by the National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO) and the Northern Ireland Safety Group (NISG). A total of 14 teams competed from all parts of the island of Ireland.

Galway workers need to get a move on

Fewer people are exercising at the recommended weekly levels than they were 15 months ago, according to new research from the Nutrition & Health Foundation (NHF). Just over a quarter (26 per cent) of Ireland’s workforce exercise at the recommended level of over 150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week, down from almost a third (32 per cent) only fifteen months ago. Four in ten (42 per cent) say they are either totally or extremely inactive during their working day. The research was commissioned to mark Ireland’s second National Workplace Wellbeing Day on Friday, 8th April 2016, which is being organised by the Nutrition & Health Foundation and supported by Ibec.

GMIT conference hears of skills shortage in the construction sector

There was some good news for students and recent graduates of construction and built environment courses attending a construction conference in GMIT last week with a number of speakers highlighting the existing demand for highly-skilled professionals and the opportunities for them in Ireland and abroad because of the current skills shortage in the construction industry.

Another common theme was the call for a long-term national strategy for delivery of infrastructure in Ireland and the requirement for greater collaboration between professionals on projects.
