Coole hosts its first conferring ceremony

Coole Park hosted a conferring ceremony for graduates of the NUI Maynooth certificate in local history last weekend, the first ceremony of its kind to be held at the park. The course was run as an outreach programme at Coole by the NUI Maynooth department of modern history, in association with the university’s adult education office. Nineteen students were conferred on the day.

New language exchange night in Galway

Local Galway residents Jack Kinsella and Una Timlin recently set up a language exchange meetup where language lovers, Galwegians, and visitors from all walks of life can come together. The first night was held in Kelly's on Monday October 25.

Prior to the event the organisers assigned one language to each table with little flags indicating the tongue spoken, with tables for Irish, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Chinese, Russian, and Japanese. Once the attendees arrived they were free to sit where they liked and switch tables as their linguistic talents fancied.

Farmer warned to dispose of carcasses properly

A farmer who owns lands where a number of sheep carcasses in various stages of decay were found has been warned by a district court judge to dispose of animal remains properly in future.

Judge David Anderson, presiding at Galway District Court this week, gave the warning after hearing how gardai and a superintendent inspector from the Department of Agriculture carried out an inspection at farmland belonging to Tom Fahy and discovered the decaying remains of 14 sheep and one calf.

Hi ho, hi ho, itzoff ze vork ve go...and so rings out the tune floating across Eyre Square and in through my window this week as the German Christmas market takes shape. Vot vit all ze merry German vorkers vit zer hammers and zer lederhosen schlapping their thighs and hammering, ze happy leetle hammer men. Humming Eine Kleine Nachtmusik as zey vork into ze small hours. Unloading zer cuckooo clox vit ze leetle burd saying cuckoo cuckoo. Ze Irish are living in ze cloud cuckoo's land.

They got there on Monday afternon, but it pis..., ahem, it rained so hard they downed their tools and looked around for a while, but you could tell straight away these were no ordinary chalet-builders. They were professional agents on a reconnassance mission for Frau Merkel.
