Tesco opens in Oranmore

The new Tesco Oranmore store was officially opened this week, which according to the company, will create 110 jobs for the town.

It is one of three new Tesco supermarkets which opened recently in Galway, Mayo, and Waterford, creating a total of 310 jobs. Another 15 jobs are expected to be created when a Tesco Express Store opens in Newcastle opposite NUIG next week.

Oranmore store manager Martin Daly says the company research had revealed that consumers in Oranmore travelled up to 20 kilometres outside of the town to do their weekly shopping.

“By opening our Tesco store in Oranmore we hope to encourage consumers to stay local and shop local, stimulating the local economy.”

The compnay says that consistent with Tesco’s global commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by 50 per cent by 2012, Tesco Oranmore features many environmental initiatives, including a motion detection lighting system, rainwater harvesting, and CO2 cooled fridges and freezers.

Local suppliers to Tesco Oranmore include Arrabawn Milk and Brogan’s Bread, while the Oranmore outlet is also one of the first Tesco stores to open with a community champion. Dolores Kilroe will work closely with local community groups, schools, charities, sports clubs and environmental groups in the area on projects such as green schools, bag packs, local fundraisers, and WEEE recycling days.
