I was in McHale Park to see Mayo disembowel Roscommon at their ease and I was in Markievicz Park to see Galway stumble luckily to a narrow 1-13 to 0-12 victory over Sligo. Based on the respective performances from both panels and managements, there will only be one result in Pearse Stadium in just over two weeks’ time. And that is a Mayo victory.

It is most unusual in any game to have a situation where almost all of the 15 starting players are absolutely disgusted with their own personal performance. However that happened last Sunday when the Galway minors got a right trimming from their Mayo counterparts.
Galway were given a real lesson in football, work-rate, and team play, and Mayo were well worthy of their nine-point victory. No doubt Gerry Fahy and his management team were stunned and hugely disappointed by the inept performance of their charges and could not believe what was unfolding in front of their eyes.

•The female-dominated crew of Joie de Vie enjoyed victory in the second race of the Galway Bay Sailing Club’s Storm Technology Series in exhilarating conditions of up to 30 knot winds. First to the windward mark, using a small headsail. Joie de Bie stayed ahead of Henry and Marina Lupton’s new boat Beoga on the run to Leverets and continued to lead until close to the end when Optique overtook. However her keel lifted on the last gybe and the crew had to drop the kite, thus ceding the lead to Joie again, who maintained it to the finish, claiming first on both Echo and IRC handicap. Now What claimed second on Echo with Optique on IRC. Despite tearing their spinnaker with a Chinese gybe near the end of the race Beoga still limped home third over the line. In Class 2 the win went to RhoCoDar who sailed a good tactical race given the conditions. Addict took second with Thataway taking third.
