European Youth Olympics
Robert McDonnell of Galway City Harriers competed in two events at the European Youth Olympics in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the Irish team last week. McDonnell excelled in the the 400m placing ninth overall and clocking a superb new best of 48.42, and also starred on the 4 x 400m relay team, which placed sixth in the final, to top a great week’s competition for him.

Galway City Harriers’ athletes secured an 11-medal haul, including six golds, at the National Juvenile Outdoor Track and Field Championships U13-19 in Tullamore at the weekend.

The hugely talented Robert McDonnell won gold in the U18 400m final in a time 49.9. His clear winning margin is a sign of his strong form ahead of his international stage appearance this week in Baku in the EYOF Games.

Galway 5km Series
The 2019 Galway 5km Series finished last Tuesday in Kilcornan, with 600 athletes completing the final race of the series despite the unseasonal conditions. Visitor Matt Coffey competing with Castlegar AC was first home, in 16.31, ahead of Cathal O Reilly of Loughrea AC in second in 16.43, and Kevin Moore third home in 16.47.

Castlegar's Lennon first home in 5k photo finish

Some 700 athletes completed the third leg of the 2019 Galway 5km Series held in Loughrea AC where Rob Lennon of Castlegar AC was first man home.

The Castlegar AC athlete broke the tap in a fast 16.43, just pipping local athlete Cathal O'Reilly of Loughrea AC. The pair provided an exciting finish, crossing the tap in the same time, with just millimetres separating them.

Golds galore for Galway Masters

Fifty of Galway’s top athletes returned from Sunday's National Masters Indoors Championships in Athlone with a huge medal haul.

Top of the medal table was Mary Barrett of Loughrea AC who won four golds at Over 60 level. She claimed gold in both jumps, firstly the high jump with a clearance of 1.15n. before setting a championship best performance of 3.21m to win the long jump. She then went on to win both the shot putt and weight for distance throws.
