Adam storms to another victory

Abas Edris Adam of Castlegar AC continued his good form at the weekend, winning the Galway Novice title at the Castlegar AC Cross Country in Merlin Woods City Park in Doughiska on Saturday.

The in form Adam came in ahead of Declan O'Connor of South Galway AC, while Diarmuid Hennessy of GCH produced a strong finish to place third

The main event on the programme, the Castlegar AC Cross Country open event, was won by Donal Devane of Ennis Track AC, who took a commanding victory in the men's 6km race. The national novice champion held off clubmate Dean Casey who finished second, followed by Mick Fogarty of Ferbane AC with an excellent run.

The first woman home overall was Isobel Oakes, with Michelle Kenny second, and Laura O'Mahony third.

Winner of the Galway Novice Championship was Sinead Kelly of GCH, with Aisling Moyles second for Castlegar and third was Deirdre Moran Smyth of GCH.

Mathys Bocquet of Craughwell AC won the open 2km race ahead of Gearoid King of Castlegar and Eoin Killeen of GCH, and Clodagh Fallon of Tuam was the first girl home.

Ulster Throws

Athenry AC athlete Liam Shaw competed at the Ulster Winter Throws festival at Finn Valley Centre, Donegal, on Saturday and took gold in both the U16 and U18 shot putt. He also added the U16 discus victory with a huge 46m30 throw, improving his previous best by more than eight metres.

Fixtures

Galway Track and Field: Galway Athletics Board will host a short track and field programme on Saturday at Dangan, Galway, with a 12 noon start.

The programme feature the following events: 400m, 800m, one mile, 5000m, shot putt and long jump.

The event is open to junior, senior and masters athletes with pre entry only via clubs.

Galway Cross Country: The 2020 Galway Cross Country championships will take place Sunday October 4 and Sunday October 11. The first day will be held at Galway Racecourse on the infield and will feature the even ages juvenile, and senior and masters races at adult level. The second day will feature the intermediate adult races and the juvenile uneven ages competitions.

The programme will commence at 10.30 am both days and will continue to 5pm to facilitate all races under required protocols. The venue for day two will be confirmed later this week.
