On Friday September 30 the Victoria Hotel was bursting at the seams when O’Donnellan & Joyce launched its winter auctions with 15 properties going under the hammer on the first of three big auctions. Lands with a historic link to the Galway Races will be auctioned for sale on November 4 in Oranmore.
In 1859 the Galway Races were held on part of these lands, and to date one of the jump fences can still be seen. At this time it was a two day flat and steeplechase meeting. The Midland Great Western Railway Company sponsored £260 to the race committee and it was a successful meet for seven years. Eight years later the meet was moved to Ballybrit to become the famous Galway Races.
