Williams’ masterpiece revisited in all its delicate beauty by Compántas Lir

A new take on Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie will be performed in Galway next week when the awardwinning drama group Compántas Lir open a run in An Taibhdhearc.

When Tennessee Williams wrote his first masterpiece in 1944 his production notes asked directors to take the play on a journey and discover what the script offered to the production. In Compántas Lir’s take on the classic, Tom, played by Vincent Moran, takes centre stage. His story is told in flashback scenes where he recounts his mother Amanda’s efforts to find a husband for his sister Laura.

The Sure What Else Would You Be At table quiz in aid of the charity Rosabel’s Rooms, takes place on Tuesday February 27 at 7.30pm in Monroe’s Live, Dominick Street.

Rosabel’s Room was established by Gary Monroe and his wife Suzanne following the tragic death of their daughter Rosabel, in April 2017. Rosabel’s Rooms aims to establish family focused bereavement suites in hospitals in Ireland and will provide financial and therapeutic support for those impacted by child loss. All proceeds from the table quiz will go to Rosabel’s Rooms.

Should flu symptoms be treated with antivirals in primary care?

The HRB Primary Care Clinical Trials Network Ireland, based at NUI Galway, are working with researchers in Oxford University’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, on the ALIC4E trial, which investigates whether the flu drug oseltamivir (Tamiflu) is cost effective and beneficial to patients consulting their GP’s with flu symptoms.

In particular, the study aims to understand if older people, infants, people with other health conditions, those treated early, or those with particularly severe flu can benefit from the treatment.

FRENCH LANGUAGE books will now be available to read and borrow from the Oranmore Library which opened its new ‘French Section’ last weekend.

This is an initiative by Galway Accueil, a group of French people living in county Galway, who meet regularly to take part in Franco Irish themed events. Catherine Gagneux, the French Honorary Consul to Galway, welcomed the new French section of Oranmore Library, saying it will be “a great way for Francophiles and French learners and speakers to get more acquainted with classic and more recent literature from France, and many other French speaking countries”.
