Tuam Cancer Care has this week been celebrating local cancer survivors and showcasing the support they provide to their local community in the run up Global Cancer Survivorship day.
Tuam Cancer Care has taken part in the #InItTogether campaign along with other cancer support centres across the country. This campaign has been designed to highlight the crucial work of these community based Cancer Support Centres and raise awareness of local services.
Maureen Grealish, Manager said as part of their activity this week, wtheyhave been highlighting their work and the services they provide to cancer survivors and their families throughout Galway.
“Our centre belongs to a network of community based cancer support centres who work to agreed standards of quality and professionalism, which is supported by the Irish Cancer Society.”
“We provide free practical and emotional support to cancer patients and their loved ones,” she said.
Cancer survivors across the globe are being celebrated as part of Global Cancer Survivorship day. In Ireland the good news is that more people are surviving cancer than ever before.
“In 1998 only four out of ten people survived their cancer. Now six out of every ten people who get cancer survive for five years or more. This is because there is better awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer, we are diagnosing it earlier, and treatments have improved dramatically thanks to decades of cancer research,” said Ms Grealish.
The transition from cancer patient to survivor can be difficult for those on a cancer journey. While many people adapt well, others experience problems in adjusting to life after a cancer diagnosis. Access to high quality information and professional support in their local communities to deal with these issues is vital.
