The landslide victory for the ‘Yes’ campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment - which saw results of 65.9 per cent in Galway West, 60.2 per cent in Galway East; 57.2 per cent in Roscommon-Galway, has been welcomed as an “historic vote” and a “mark of compassion and respect”.

This is the view of Niall Ó Tuathail, the Galway West candidate for the Social Democrats, who said he was “incredibly honoured” to have played a “small part of this historic, women-led campaign” in Galway. He said the results from the Galway constituencies “showed the people of Galway can respond with compassion and care for pregnant people who require healthcare”.

Galway’s Paralympic Champion Eoghan Clifford this week announced his retirement from international cycling. Since his international paracycling debut in 2014, Clifford has been a dominant force in the MC3 category, both on the track and the road. The Galway-based rider has amassed fifteen podium placings at major event, including a Paralympic Title, four World Titles, and six World Cup gold medals.

Blood Bike Service to have a big day out at The Galway Plaza

The annual Bike Fest in aid of Blood Bike West will take place at The Galway Plaza this Monday, June 4. The event has raised over €10,000 for the charity over the past few years. Blood Bike West was Ireland’s first Blood Bike Service and is an all-volunteer emergency logistic service using motorcycles for the collection and delivery of urgent items to and from hospitals, clinics, laboratories, hospices, and other patient centres in the West of Ireland.

Mercy Primary School to offer continuous primary education to boys

As the current school year draws to a close, the Mercy Primary School is already looking forward to the historic announcement that its primary school can now offer the continuation of primary education to boys after First Class from September 2018 onwards.

Rena Jordan, Principal of the Mercy (and past pupil) commenting on this announcement said that up to now, the Mercy has catered for boys and girls up to 1st class after which boys have left to join other primary schools and the Mercy have just retained its girls through to 6th class.

May is Lyme Disease awareness month so I thought I’d write a little bit about it, my own experience of it and how to prevent it.

It was Dr Joseph Jemsek who said that “Lyme has no peer or precedent in human illness because of its unique ability to disassemble the human nervous system.” Lyme disease is an extremely serious debilitating disease with a huge range of horrible symptoms. It is spread through tick bites and there is a huge lack of awareness about it in Ireland still.

NUI Galway launches Ireland Illustrated Online - charting two centuries of travel in Ireland

How was Ireland depicted in illustrations of the country produced by travellers in the period from 1680 to 1860? A new database of images drawn from travel accounts answers this question. Based on years of research by a group of investigators at NUI Galway led by Professor Jane Conroy, Ireland Illustrated is now available to view online.
