Strength of local economy illustrated as 1,330 new .ie domains registered in Galway so far this year

1,330 new .ie domains were registered in Galway in the first half of 2018 (1 January—30 June), according to the latest Domain Profile Report published today by the IE Domain Registry, the company that manages and maintains Ireland’s official country domain name, .ie.

The figure is a 40 per cent year-on-year increase. Overall new .ie domain registrations in Connacht in H1 2018 numbered 2,364, a 39 per cent year-on-year increase.

Councillor warns that Salthill is becoming ‘a public caravan park’

Salthill is being allowed to turn into a public caravan park with camper vans parked indiscriminately at various locations and tents pitched in public parks.

That was the view of Cllr Peter Keane, who has called on the Galway City Council to “step up to the mark” and enforce by-laws prohibiting public camping in the city.

New water supply for Williamstown following €10 million investment

The Williamstown water treatment plant has been decommissioned following a €10 million investment by Irish Water, which has seen the extension of the Lough Mask water supply from Ballyhaunis in Co Mayo to Williamstown in Co Galway and Ballinlough in Co Roscommon.

As a result of this investment the old Williamstown water treatment plant has now been decommissioned and the scheme has been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List in the agency’s quarterly update, published this week. The works included the laying of 23km of pipeline and the construction of a large pumping station at Ballyhaunis delivering water to Williamstown via a new reservoir at Garranlahan.

The ‘Pres’ Athenry as it is fondly referred to, has had thousands of students pass through the doors since the Presentation Sisters commenced Secondary Education in the town in 1947. It is fitting that 2018 is the 300 year (Tercentenary) celebration of the birth of Nano Nagle, the founder of the Presentation Sisters. The Presentation Sisters are to be thanked for their pioneering work in establishing and cultivating a centre of excellence in education that the town of Athenry has benefited from.

Through the decades of education we now find three generations of the community have an association with the ‘Pres’. Past students are found all over the world. The impact that teachers have made on students, the friendships formed, and the life lessons learned during the moulding of those formative years are positive associations with the school. The school became a community for so many in the time they spent there.
