Kinvara boardwalk is ‘visionary’

The proposal by Kinvara Community Council to develop a seaside boardwalk connecting Kinvara village to Dunguaire Castle is visionary and deserving of government support, says Fine Gael junior minister Ciaran Cannon.

An application for funds to bring the project through the design and planning process has now been submitted by the Galway County Council as part of the Government’s new rural regeneration and development programme.

Minister Michael Ring, who is responsible for the administration of the funding programme, visited Kinvara earlier this year to meet the Kinvara Community Council and see the site for the boardwalk development.

Deputy Cannon said; “I am pleased the Galway County Council has now submitted an application for funds to support the design and planning phase of the development of this boardwalk. This would be the most exciting amenity to be developed in South Galway for decades.

"The boardwalk would connect the much visited Dunguaire Castle to Kinvara village and would in itself become a major tourist attraction. I invited Minister Ring to Kinvara last April so he could see the potential of this project and meet with the members of Kinvara Community Council.”

Kinvara based Fine Gael councillor Joe Byrne has worked closely with Kinvara Community Council in preparing their application for funds and believes that the project is deserving of government support.

“During his visit to Kinvara Minister Ring requested that we ask the Galway County Council to become the lead agency for the development of the boardwalk. We have now submitted an application for funding to bring this project to the stage where it has full planning permission so that further funding can be sought for the actual delivery of the project.

"This is a genuinely visionary proposal that would transform Kinvara and South Galway in terms of our tourism offering and the project is really deserving of government support. Minister Cannon and I will continue to engage with Minister Ring to make a strong case for funding.”
