Legal history to be made as Supreme Court to sit in NUI Galway next week

Legal history will be made in March, as the Supreme Court will sit outside a courthouse for the first time since it returned to the Four Courts in 1932. This will also be the first time it sits in Galway and only the third time the court will sit outside of Dublin.

Former Mayor of Galway, Cllr Pearce Flannery has issued a strong call of all local election candidates to enter into a voluntary code of conduct that ensures that all candidates desist from using election posters in the forthcoming local elections.
Cllr Flannery was successful at the City Council meeting of 12 November 2018 in getting a motion passed by the majority of councillors banning the use of election posters.

Concerns are being expressed that Irish Water will refuse to review its plans for wastewater treatment plants in Connemara, and instead challenge a decision by the Galway County Council on where such plants should be located.
Irish Water is to build plants in An Spidéal and An Cheathrú Rua. However, at Monday’s county council meeting, councillors voted that wastewater treatment plants throughout the county must be at a distance of at least 100 metres from other buildings.

Researchers at NUI Galway’s Ryan Institute and School of Natural Sciences have carried out a study aimed at identifying strains of seaweed which are good for aquaculture and agriculture in Ireland. The study discovered that sea lettuce, a fast growing seaweed with excellent nutritional value for animal feed and industrial uses, could return higher yields when the right strains are used. This seaweed is also responsible for green tides in Cork and Dublin.
