McDonald’s Ireland contributed €6.2 million to Galway economy

McDonald’s Ireland has revealed that the company contributed €6.2 million directly to the local economy in Galway in 2017, through restaurant activity, employee salaries, and taxes.

McDonald’s has launched an economic impact report, ‘McDonald’s in Ireland’, highlighting the significant economic contribution of the company in Ireland. In total, McDonald’s contributed €196 million directly to the Irish economy.

Hanley accuses city council of ‘failing’ Travellers

The Galway City Council has been accused of having “failed local Travellers by not providing the proper provision of housing,” by Social Democrats Galway City East councillor Owen Hanley.

Cllr Hanley was speaking after the protests, hosted by Galway Traveller Movement, which were held outside City Hall on Monday. He alleged that the local authority had not applied for money from the specific Traveller accommodation fund.

Mayor of Galway City, Cllr Mike Cubbard and Chair of the Transport Strategic Policy Committee, Cllr Eddie Hoare, launched the Galway City Council Christmas Park and Ride Service this week.

The annual Christmas Park and Ride will start tomorrow Friday December 6 and run until Tuesday December 24 2019. The Service will operate from Galway Racecourse to the City Centre Coach Station at Fairgreen, from 9.30am to 9.15pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 11.00am to 9.15pm on Sundays.

CÚRAM launches initiative to cut plastic waste in laboratories

CÚRAM, the SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices based at NUI Galway, has launched a new short video documentary The Time to Green Our Labs is Now as part of the Galway Green Labs initiative, which recently led to the CÚRAM lab being the first in Europe to be awarded Green Lab certification.

The documentary tells the story of Galway Green Labs, which was spearheaded by Dr Una Fitzgerald, a CÚRAM funded investigator and director of the Galway Neuroscience Centre at NUI Galway. Together with her ‘green team’ of CÚRAM researchers and staff, and with the support of the university registrar and deputy president, Professor Pól Ó Dochartaigh, and the Community University Sustainability Partnership, she is working to transform practice across campus to address issues such as plastic waste, energy reduction, recycling, and water usage.
